Diagnostic Imaging
Diagnostic imaging lets us see inside your pet without surgery — a vital tool for diagnosing many conditions that wouldn’t be apparent from a physical examination alone.
Digital X-ray (radiography)
Our digital X-ray system produces high-quality images quickly and at lower radiation doses than traditional film. We use it to:
- Investigate lameness and joint problems
- Look for fractures and assess their nature
- Check the chest for heart and lung conditions
- Assess the abdomen for foreign bodies, masses or organ changes
- Examine teeth (dental radiography during dental procedures)
- Check pregnancies in late stages
Most X-rays are taken with the patient sedated or under a short anaesthetic — this keeps them still, comfortable and avoids any risk to handlers.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses harmless sound waves to produce real-time images of soft tissues, blood vessels and the heart. It’s particularly useful for:
- Examining abdominal organs (liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, intestines)
- Confirming and monitoring pregnancy
- Investigating heart problems (echocardiography)
- Guiding fine needle samples from internal masses
Ultrasound is painless and doesn’t usually require sedation, though we may clip a small patch of fur to get a clear image.
When imaging might be recommended
Your vet may suggest imaging if your pet has:
- Persistent lameness or pain
- Coughing, breathlessness or heart murmurs
- Vomiting, weight loss or abdominal pain
- A mass that needs further investigation
- Suspected swallowed foreign object
We’ll always discuss what we’re hoping to find, what’s involved, and the cost before going ahead.
