Brucella canis Testing

To help keep all pets, clients and our team safe, we have specific procedures for animals that may be at risk of Brucella canis, a contagious bacterial infection.

For new clients

When registering with us, you’ll be asked if your pet has come from outside the UK. If your pet is from abroad, we can only register them if they have had an APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) Brucella test.

Testing requirements

  • If your pet has been in the UK less than 3 months, they will need two blood tests, 3 months apart.
  • If your pet has been in the UK more than 3 months, only one blood test is required.

If your pet needs emergency care during this period

If your pet needs surgery or in-patient care before both APHA tests are complete:

  • We will perform an in-house SNAP test for Brucella.
  • Full isolation protocols and PPE charges will apply in these cases.

For existing clients

We strongly recommend that all at-risk pets — especially those from abroad — receive the APHA Brucella blood test.

If you choose not to proceed with APHA testing:

  • Each time your pet requires surgery or in-patient care, a SNAP test will be required.
  • Additional PPE charges will apply.

Important:

  • If a SNAP test is positive, routine surgeries will be postponed until full APHA testing is completed.
  • For emergency situations, treatment will be at the discretion of the attending vet.

What tests are involved?

  • SNAP test — rapid in-house screening
  • APHA blood test, which includes:
    • Sampling fee
    • iELISA test
    • SAT test
    • Postage and packaging

Safety first

  • All positive or suspected positive pets will be treated under strict isolation.
  • Full PPE will be worn by staff.
  • Confirmed cases will be reported to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) as required.
